Newlyn travelled to St Cleer looking to build on their solid performance from their last outing to play a home side who were immediately above them in the ECPL and who were clearly bouyed from their mid-week win at St. Blazey.
The home side started well but Newlyn - playing with the wind in their backs - gradually grew in to the game and their speed in attack was causing the home defence problems. Ross London was played in on 7 minutes and is left foot strike from 16 yards arrowed past the keeper into the far corner to open the scoring. Newlyn then lost 18 year old Owen London to an ankle injury but the Saints were able to bring on Harry Mugford who has been missing from the team since January.
Ross London then found himself racing on to a through ball with only the keeper to beat but his run was ended with a last ditch challenge that saw the visitors appeal for a foul only for the referee to waive them away.
Not to be stopped London then doubled his tally after a 40 yard run through the entire defence on 17 minutes. Dan Parsonage added a third for Newlyn with a snapshot from 12 yards after a defensive error. London was denied a first half hat-trick when he smashed a drive against the outside of the post. Mugford also saw his long range effort tipped around the post from the home side's goalkeeper who had to make some good saves in the half to keep the score to three. Newlyn's work ethic was clearly visible with veteran Martyn Probert at the heart of everything good in their first half performance.
With the wind now in their favour St Cleer started the second half on the offensive and Newlyn were indebted to Nathan Prentice in their goal for some fine saves in the half. London then completed his hat-trick when he finished a wonderful one-touch move from the whole attack - Lucas Moses and the returning Josh Dingle who had been out of Newlyn's squad since last December, combining magically down the right wing before Elliot Powell turned Dingle's cross back to London who finished emphatically.
Newlyn were able to defend well and it was a solid performance at the heart of their defence from Harry Hay and another long term absentee Logan Capeling who was also returning to action for the first time in 3 months. However they were disappointed to concede a 92 minute goal when a cross held up in the wind and was headed in at the far post.
This was a performance that Newlyn could be proud of and shows what they can achieve when they are able to keep a settled team from game to game. Newlyn now look forward to playing their first home game in 2 months when they host Looe Town on Saturday at Cargoll Road.
