St Newlyn East finished their home fixtures this season with a deserved win over St Cleer who were sitting just above them in the East Cornwall Premier League at kick-off.
St Cleer started brightly but Newlyn were able to weather the visitors’ initial enthusiasm and gradually started to take control of the midfield with their three of Jack Thompson, Harry Mugford and Elliott Powell dominating their opposite positions. With Harry Hay producing a colossus of a performance Newlyn always looked in control and used this as a base to build their match winning display on.
On 14 minutes a fine move down Newlyn’s right wing saw the energetic Mugford square to Martyn Probert, playing as a lone striker again due to Ross London’s injury, who had found space in the penalty area, and he finished confidently to open Newlyn’s account.
A rare lapse in concentration from Newlyn’s defence saw St Cleer almost equalise but the striker completely missed the Newlyn goal. Powell and Lucas Moses both had guilt edged opportunities to score for the home side, but both were unable to score from close range.
The interval at half-time saw Newlyn introduce Ross London and Dan Woodgate and the two immediately combined within three minutes of the re-start to allow London to fire high into the net past the stranded keeper. London then latched on to a through ball and rounded the keeper but with the goal at his mercy his final touch took him too wide, and the opportunity was gone.
St Cleer was indebted to their goalkeeper who was having a fine game and produced some outstanding saves to prevent Newlyn adding to the score. Their only real scoring chance came from a header off a corner that rattled the Newlyn crossbar.
On 79 minutes the outstanding Probert picked up a pass and blasted a 25-yard screamer into the far corner of the net for his second and Newlyn’s third goal of the game ensuring all the points remained at Cargoll Road.
The win takes Newlyn back above St Cleer in to sixth pace in the league and with no game now for just over 2 weeks Newlyn must wait until Wednesday 27th April when they make the short trip to Roche for their penultimate league fixture.
