St Newlyn East welcomed high-flying Gunnislake to Cargoll Road on Saturday in their penultimate home league fixture of the season. The Saints took an early lead Ross London scoring from close range off a Lucas Moses cross after just 7 minutes following fine work by Jack Thompson and Martyn Probert in the heart of their midfield.
London thought he had added to his tally mid-way through the half but saw his shot go agonisingly wide. The Newlyn striker then blotted his copybook when he was sin binned on 38 minutes meaning his side had to see out the half and 3 minutes added time with just 10 men.
Newlyn introduced Dan Parsonage and Elliot Powell at half time, and this changed the game - though not as Newlyn would have hoped. Parsonage’s misplaced pass allowed Gunnislake to break and equalise within 30 seconds of the re start but worse was to come for Parsonage when he was then dismissed for an off the ball incident just 2 minutes later leaving his side with virtually the whole half to play a man down.
This was the break Gunnislake needed, and they used the extra man advantage well - scoring another 3 goals in the half including a good header from a corner and the final one a tap in on 82 mins following a comedy of errors from the home defence!
Newlyn still had opportunities to score with both Brett Prentice and Harry Mugford both unable to score from close range. Newlyn’s misery was compounded with injuries to Jack Thompson, Owen London and Harry Hay who all were unable to complete the game.
Overall, a game to forget for The Saints as their own ill-discipline ultimately cost them but they now look forward to their last home game of the season next week when they entertain St Cleer at Cargoll Road.
