St Newlyn East 2-1 Foxhole Stars
St Newlyn East made it back-to-back wins in the East Cornwall Premier League with a hard-fought home win over Foxhole Stars.
With a bare squad due to injuries and work commitments Newlyn feared the worse before kick-off but the team produced another fantastic performance that has epitomized the way all of the players have come together over recent weeks.
Newlyn took an early lead when a swift attack saw the London brothers - Ross and Owen – combine to find Jack Scott surging in to space through the middle and his shot flew past Lake into the Foxes goal after just 3 minutes.
The Saints were now on the front and Ross London could have increased their lead before Harry Hay, enjoying a superb performance as stand-in left back, produced a delicate chip over Lake from a Ross London back-heel to double the home side’s advantage after just 25 minutes.
Foxhole were aggrieved to have a goal rightly ruled out for offside before a rash challenge by Newlyn’s Josh Dingle on 44 minutes saw ex-Saint Brodie Mitchell fall into the penalty area and the referee award a spot-kick that was duly dispatched by Ryan Wilkins despite Newlyn keeper Zef Counter getting a hand to the penalty.
The second half was fairly even with Foxhole just shading the possession but with Newlyn having the more clear cut opportunities to score. A freekick from Newlyn captain Jack Thompson was almost touched in by Elliot Powell at the far post and Ross London saw a chance go agonizingly wide.
Despite six minutes of injury time Newlyn were able to hold on for the victory that sees them move up the table to seventh position.
