St Newlyn East continued their unbeaten start to the season with a comfortable home win over a young Wadebridge Reserves at Cargoll Road thanks to goals from Ross London, Max Smith and Owen London.
Despite missing eight regulars - including all of the Saints’ defensive back four - Newlyn started on the front foot and were able to enjoy long periods of possession with their two wide players of Jay Manning and Owen London finding space out wide and able to attack the visitors’ full backs.
Ross London had an early opportunity to put the hosts ahead when he met a cross from the right but could only place his shot agonisingly wide. The same player stretched to meet a cross from Max Smith but just failed to connect when he seemed certain to score.
The impressive Russell Brooker saw two long range efforts saved by Jeal in the Wadebridge goal whilst his midfield partner Jack Thompson saw his shot deflected and fly just outside of the goal post.
Ross London danced past two defenders but his goal bound shot that followed was well saved when Jeal spread himself to block from close range.
As the half drew to close Newlyn finally broke the deadlock when their leading goal scorer Ross London shot home with two minutes left in the half. The home side were not to be denied and just two minutes later Max Smith met a ball on the edge of the penalty area to smash home a low volley to double Newlyn’s lead.
The first half excitement still wasn’t finished when a rare Wadebridge attack saw a deflected header from a late free kick head towards the top corner only for Nathan Prentice to pull off the save of the match diving to his right to parry the header away.
The second half continued in much the same vein as the first with Newlyn dominating possession and using their wide players to great effect. Newlyn were able to introduce Ben Hawken mid-way through the half for his first competitive football of the season and the experienced defender showed he was still as sharp as ever making a surging run down the left wing within minutes of his season debut.
Brooker and Thompson again went close from distance and Simon Baulch saw his headers from free kicks miss the target before Owen London put the result firmly beyond doubt with a little over ten minutes remaining – pouncing on a loose ball, beating his marker and firing home past the diving Jeal.
Newlyn were then able to bring on two further substitutes for their first competitive league appearances for the club in Theo George and Ollie Randle, both under 18s and they helped the team to see out the match without further incident.
A depleted Newlyn will be delighted with the result that maintained their undefeated start to the season. With no fixture this weekend they next travel to Dobwalls Reserves in the George Evely Cup.
