OWEN LONDON GOAL WINS DERBY FOR NEWLYN.

OWEN LONDON GOAL WINS DERBY FOR NEWLYN.

Saints Sports News5 May 2024 - 14:17

Saints leave it late to overcome Newquay but deserved to take all the spoils!

Newlyn made their shortest journey of the season to face Newquay Reserves at Mount Wise in a derby game that they needed to win in order to continue their recent good form and climb up the league table. Despite still missing the injured Jack Thompson and with Chris Sturgess, Sean Kinsella, Simon Baulch and Jadon Gotthardt all unavailable they went into the fixture still confident they could get the result needed.

After just 6 minutes Newlyn had their first opportunity of note when an Ash Bradshaw free-kick went close. A minute later and Owen London saw his shot well saved before he then latched on to a Jake Watson cross to shoot wide.

Newlyn were asserting themselves and forced a series of corners that placed more pressure on the home defence but Newlyn were unable to find the breakthrough. Cam Burt made a superb run down the right but his low effort was again well saved by James Peters in the Peppermints goal.

A booking for Newquay’s Drew Brion for a cynical trip just before the interval ended a frustrating first half for The Saints that their pressure and possession had not resulted in a goal.

An injury to Will Perry saw Newlyn introduce Sonny Summers-Evans for the start of the second half. An early chance for Watson was again dealt with by Peters before Burt again saw his shot/cross tipped over the crossbar.

Newquay had a period of pressure around the hour mark that saw a corner blocked on the goal line by Mugford and cleared to safety via the underside of the crossbar. Burt had yet another shot well saved before Mugford became the second player of the day to find himself in the referee’s book for a foul.

Jackson Rochford and Dan Ball were introduced by Newlyn with just over twenty minutes left and the two players instantly combined – Rochford crossing for Ball who shot wide when well placed to score.

Burt then collided with the Newquay goalkeeper with 10 minutes to go that unfortunately saw Peters replaced by Kempthorne in the home goal. Newlyn were now pressing forward looking for the winner and they were rewarded with a goal from a fine move that saw Owen London burst into the penalty area and fire an unstoppable shot over the goalkeeper and into the far corner.

Newlyn were able to see out the eight minutes of added time without further incident and take the three points their overall performance merited.
