Newlyn travelled to St Stephen buoyed and bolstered with the return of Mugford, Perry, Kinsella and Ball but with Ethan Vickers replacing the suspended Prentice in goal, and set about trying to put the Boscastle defeat behind them. Early chances from the start were to prove that Newlyn were out to make amends.
Both Ross and Owen London had opportunities to score inside the first 3 minutes and the warnings for St Stephen were not heeded when on 4 minutes Newlyn’s leading goal scorer Ross London unleashed a low, left foot screamer from 18 yards to open the scoring.
On the quarter of an hour mark Jake Watson fed Cam Burt who saw his hot saved just wide of the post and tipped away for a corner. Russ Brooker then had a 25-yard drive just flash wide before a slick move down Newlyn’s right wing between Brooker, Burt and Watson was met by Ross London to slam home for Newlyn’s second.
The only surprise was that it had taken Newlyn 23 minutes to score a second gal such was their dominance. Both London brothers were terrorising the home defence but found all their efforts well saved by the home goalkeeper. Ross London contrived to miss from 2 yards before making amends by scoring his hat trick – bundling home from close range on 36 minutes.
Sonny Summers-Evans forced a good save by the St Stephen keeper with a shot from the left and Owen London added a fourth first half goal for Newlyn just before the interval when mazy run past defenders saw him fire across the goal and into the far corner.
The second half continued in much the same way as the first – Newlyn dominating possession but unable to score from the numerous chances thee created. Brooker hit a 35-yard drive just wide after good run within 2 minutes of the re start and Watson the saw hs header glance off the post from a Summer-Evans cross.
Cam Burt’s powerful header on 61 minutes flashed just over the cross bar before Owen London, who had been a constant threat all game, was brought down in the area for a stonewall penalty that Newlyn’s young attacker picked himself up to smash home the resulting penalty with 20 minutes remaining.
Newlyn continued to create chances – Rochford fired wide, Mugford’s right foot shot was unable to trouble the keeper and Summer-Evans nearly added a sixth in the dying seconds.
The victory allowed Newlyn to get back on track ahead of a derby fixture against Newquay Reserves in their next match when the complete their Saturday league campaign for the season.
