TEN MEN NEWLYN ROCK SOLID AT ROCHE TO EARN WIN

Saints Sports News24 Apr 2024 - 14:59

Nathan Prentice sees red but Newlyn good value to take all three points.

St Newlyn East were worthy and comfortable winners in their away fixture at Roche and this was despite playing a third of the match with ten men following goalkeeper Nathan Prentice’s harsh dismissal on the hour mark.

Newlyn were able to control the first half for long periods with Roche happy to drop deep allowing the Saints to pass the ball with ease across their own defence before trying to unpick the home rear guard and Roche hitting long balls forward to try and counterattack without any real success.

Owen London went close for Newlyn on 15 minutes getting his shot away as he was brought down in the area before Jake Warson saw his shot well saved a minute later. The home side were reduced to 10 men for a brief period on 30 minutes for dissent that resulted in a sin bin.

Jack Thompson’s shot from distance was well saved again, pushed away from the diving keeper for a corner before Jarry Mugford’s deflected shot shaved the outside of the post as the half ended.

Max Smith was introduced for the inured Mugford at half time with Chris Sturgess moving from full back into midfield. Another sweeping move saw Owen London scythed down in the penalty area leaving his older brother Ross to score with confidence from the spot on 51 minutes.

Newlyn were then left in disbelief when their keeper rushed out to clear a Roche counterattack only to see his clearance strike team mate Jadon Gotthardt and rebound from close range to him and a Roche attacker who became entangled that saw the referee incredibly produce a red card for Prentice for preventing a goal scoring opportunity that only the official saw. Captain Thompson donned the gloves as Newlyn re shuffled their line up to see out the remaining minutes.

Ash Bradshaw saw his free kick saved before Newlyn were again awarded another penalty with Owen London again hacked down with Ross converting comfortably. Newly were dealt a blow when a late challenge on Thompson saw him injure his ribs but he was able to play on through the pain.

Russ Brooker made sure of the three points with a low, swerving shot that deceived the keeper on 82 minutes to end any faint hopes Roche may have had of any comeback and ensure Newlyn deservedly left with all three points.
