Owen London's spectacular opening goal puts Newlyn on track for home win.

A stunning overhead goal from Owen London started Newlyn on their way to a home win over old Duchy League rivals Boscastle in the Kernow Stone St Piran League Division 1 East encounter at Cargoll Road.

Newlyn began the game in determined fashion – Jack Thompson twice going close form distance in the opening minutes before Owen London was brought down on the edge of the penalty area on 10 minutes.

The resulting freekick from Thompson was well saved and parried away by Lawson in the Boscastle goal but Ross London reacted quickest to the loose ball, beating the full back before crossing back into the penalty area where his brother Owen acrobatically leapt into the air with his back to goal and fired over his right shoulder into the back of the net for one of the goals of the season.

Another Thompson free kick caused chaos in the Boscastle area, and the ball fell to the feet of Jake Watson who smashed home high into the net to double Newlyn’s lead on 23 minutes.

Lawson again saved well for the visitors before a late challenge on Thompson saw the Saints captain replaced by Russell Brooker who had been unavailable for Newlyn since the start of December. Boscastle immediately benefited when Cam Burt was harshly penalised after e30 minutes for a handball that saw the ball come off his trailing leg and strike his arm with the referee awarding a penalty that was duly dispatched by Josh Insley.

Nathan Prentice saved well, diving low at the feet of an attacker before Ross London was unable to finish a fine Newlyn move – narrowly missing at the far post on 38 minutes before shooting wide 2 minutes later.

Boscastle gave Newlyn a late scare in the half when a low shot hit a post before Owen London bagged his second of the game in first half injury time from another assist off brother Ross when he rose highest at the far post to head back across the goalkeeper to restore Newlyn’s two goal advantage.

The second half saw Newlyn make early changes with Sam Eglinton also able to return to action after a long absence replacing Sonny Summers-Evans. Newlyn’s midfielder Harry Mugford bustled and battled his way past three defenders before he was able to stab a shot back across the goal from a tight angle and into the net off the far post for Newlyn’s fourth goal on 56 minutes.

Martyn Probert was brought on for Ross London with thirty minutes remaining and the veteran striker was unlucky not to score when his shot flashed inches wide of the post. Dan Woodgate was then set free through the middle of the pitch but was cynically fouled, the referee allowing Newlyn the advantage but choosing to not punish the Boscastle player with further sanction for what was another of many fouls committed during the game.

In the closing moments the Boscastle keeper was again called in to action saving acrobatically to his right from a ross London shot.
The win helps to keep Newlyn moving up the league table with a run of four wins from their last five league games.
