SAINTS RUN RIOT AT LISKEARD!

SAINTS RUN RIOT AT LISKEARD!

Saints Sports News18 Dec 2023 - 13:18

Newlyn hit nine in dominant display.

St Newlyn East produced a clinical and dominant first half performance that effectively ended the contest at half time - scoring six goals and probably should and could have gone into the interval with more.

Jadon Gotthardt opened the goal fest after 4 minutes rising like a salmon to try and reach a free-kick before powering home the follow up from Jake Watson’s attempt on goal that fell into his path.

Ross London added a second 3 minutes later before Harry Mugford scored Newlyn’s third on 15 minutes – Saints magic midfielder turning his marker before surging forward and hitting a ferocious left foot shot from 25 yards the flew over the goalkeeper’s head and into the corner of the net.

Liskeard also had their moments in the half, but their efforts were well dealt with by Newlyn’s defensive line of Burt, Gotthardt, Sturgess and Bradshaw. Newlyn captain - Jack Thompson, fired a through ball to Watson who once again was able to race clear of Liskeard's back line but when he seemed certain to shoot he chose to look for a team mate and the chance was gone.

Dan Woodgate notched his customary goal when he was quickest to react in the penalty area to a loose ball and smashed home after 25 minutes. Ross London scored his second goal on 33 minutes with an low finish past the diving goalkeeper for Saints’ fifth of the half.

Newlyn were rampant and looked like they would score almost every time they attacked. London should have added to his tally when he rounded the keeper but with the goal at his mercy he shot wide from 6 yards to the disbelief of all watching.

His younger brother Owen then showed him how to finish, Newlyn’s young wing wizard was set free down the left wing before cutting inside to coolly finish with aplomb into the far corner as the half drew to a close.

The half-time interval and a six goal lead saw Newlyn make 4 changes – both London brothers, Cam Burt and Mugford being replaced by Max Smith, Simon Baulch, Jackson Rochford and Sonny Summers-Evans.

Liskeard started the second half brighter and determined with their young side – to their credit – continuing to try and keep possession and pass through Newlyn. However it was Newlyn who added another goal 10 minutes after the re start when substitute Baulch pounced on a goalkeeping error to score his first with a tap into an empty goal. Baulch then added his second racing clear onto Jack Thompson's defence splitting pass to score under the advancing keeper.

A lapse in concentration then saw Newlyn let Liskeard score 2 goals – the first saw Jacob Broadwater score off the post when set free through the middle of Newlyn’s defence from a long ball, and the second minutes later on 67 minutes from a dubious penalty decision that saw the same player score from the spot.

Jackson Rochford fired volley over the crossbar from an in-swinging corner and Watson and Thompson both also went close. Newlyn were forced to make another change when Ash Bradshaw landed heavily on the same shoulder he injured in a previous game - Saints' management taking no chances with he experienced full-back. Newlyn were also able to bring on Martyn Probert for the final 15 minutes as the veteran striker continues his recovery from a serious knee injury.

Nathan Prentice in Newlyn’s goal was forced into a rare moment of action to save acrobatically high to his right to tip away a long range effort before being replaced in goal by Bualch having picked up an injury - Ross London entering the match again and he immediately scored his hat trick, having beaten two defenders he smashed home with his left foot with 10 minutes remaining.

Liskeard's young side - to their credit - kept trying to the very end but Newlyn never looked like losing this game from the opening whistle and will be very pleased with their performance on a wet and heavy pitch that saw them continue to climb up the Division 1 East table.
