St Newlyn East came away from St Columb Major with a much-deserved win that saw them start to climb up the St Piran Division 1 East table. With Dan Woodgate and Ash Bradshaw returning to the squad Newlyn were able to name a strong lineup ahead of kick off.

Major – under new management – started the game strongly and looked a threat from corners but Newlyn were able to deal with these thanks to Jadon Gotthardt and Chris Sturgess at the heart of their defence.

The games first real opportunity fell to Newlyn on 10 minutes who broke down the left wing with Woodgate whose pass was converted by Ross London only for a very late linesman’s flag to rule the goal out for offside. Captain Jack Thompson saw his shot well saved by Tom Ball in the St Columb goal and this was quickly followed by Ross London heading over on 26 minutes when well placed to score.

Cam Burt collected the ball and took aim on 30 minutes, his powerful goal bound effort took a big deflection off a defender and left Ball rooted to the spot as the ball ended up in the back of the net to open the Newlyn scoring.

Jake Watson was next to go close for Newlyn and Harry Mugford also saw his shot blocked by a defender. As the half ended a Newlyn East corner was met by Ross London and his strong header hit the back of the net to double Newlyn’s advantage.

A change of formation with the introduction of Bradshaw, Owen London and Ben Lawrence at half time saw Newlyn steamroller St Columb in the second half and score four goals which could and should have been more.

Owen London had an immediate impact – beating the full back before seeing his shot deflected just wide of the post after just a minute of the restart. He then scored the goal of the game on 49 minutes cutting inside from the left wing before unleashing a swerving shot from 20 yards that nestled in the top corner much to the delight of Newlyn’s travelling ‘young ultras’ behind the goal.

Ross London was also causing the home defenders lots of problems and his shot on 58 minutes was parried by the home goalkeeper only for the older London brother to place his second attempt from the follow up wide. However Newlyn soon added their fourth when Owen London’s shot struck the crossbar, but Woodgate was quickest to react to finish from close range three minutes later.

Ross London scored his second of the day and Newlyn’s fifth – again another header from a corner – on 64 minutes and this was followed soon after with another glorious opportunity for Newlyn that Bradshaw placed over the crossbar when the ball fell to him inside the penalty area. Owen London was tormenting the home defence and he was unlucky not to score his second of the day when he smashed another shot against the crossbar. Jack Thompson had two shots from distance, but Newlyn’s captain was unable to find any power or accuracy with both efforts and were easily saved.

Owen London scored his second when a fabulous move in the closing minutes saw Newlyn’s precocious attacker burst clear and he raced into the area to finish with a clinical shot into the far corner.
