How Newlyn lost this St Piran League East match against Newquay Reserves will remain a mystery for years to come!
Cargoll Road was passed fit to play and despite missing several key players – notably captain Jack Thompson and striker Ross London – Newlyn dominated possession from the outset, pressing the visitors deep into their half.
A fine move down the right wing saw a cross met by Jackson Rochford who saw his header flash inches wide past the post and then Harry Mugford also came close with a thunderous shout that narrowly flew over the crossbar.
Newlyn were in total control and Newquay’s tackling became evermore desperate. A late tackle on Saints’ left back Ash Bradshaw saw him land heavily on his shoulder and the resulting free kick saw another Newlyn chance go wide.
Newquay had not made a single effort of note in the whole half with Newlyn keeper Prentice a spectator. On 30 minutes, completely against the run of play, Newlyn’s defender Cam Burt tried to clear a speculative shot that was going wide only for it to slice off his foot and into the net to the shock of all watching such had been Newlyn’s control of the game. This seemed to stun Newlyn and with their only shot on target three minutes later Newquay doubled their lead when Thorn out-muscled Tristan Wood to score with a low shot under Prentice.
Bradshaw’s shoulder injury had worsened, and he was replaced by new signing Jake Watson at half time with Lawrence coming on for Jackson Rochford as Newlyn looked to turn their superiority into goals.
The second half continued in the same fashion as the first with Newlyn enjoying all the possession and Newquay resorting to long balls to their attack to relieve the pressure. Despite spending ling periods in control of the ball Newlyn were unable to make the breakthrough their play deserved and incredibly fell further behind on 74 minutes when – with their only shot in the half Newquay scored a third when Wallis’s long-range effort found the net.
A late challenge by Burt saw Newquay awarded a penalty with ten minutes remaining that Wallis duly scored.
How Newlyn conceded four goals against a team that only had 2 shots on target from open play for the whole game is a question that Newlyn will need to answer. Still at the bottom of the league they are in cup action next Saturday in arguably their toughest game of the season when they travel to Saltash Borough who have won the St Piran’s Premier Division for the previous two seasons.
