Newlyn out of sorts in first home league game

After two good cup performances Newlyn may have expected to extend their run of form into their first home league game but they absolutely failed to do so. Possibly lulled into a casual approach having seen Torpoint's recent form the Saints would end the day bottom of the league – a position not faced by the club in many years.

Things started badly for Newlyn as one of their most consistent performers Cam Burt was forced off in the opening minutes through injury. Newlyn moved the ball well in the opening periods and Torpoint were forced to dig in as Newlyn threatened to opening the scoring but were thwarted by Westall in the visitor's goal who saved well from Ross London and Russell Brooker.

A poor passage of play on 23 minutes resulted on the first real shot in anger by either side, and it was the visitors that scored - against the run of play - from a mistake at the back by the normally stalwart Sam Eglinton resulting in a very soft goal as he tried to head a long clearance sideways to a team mate only for his header to deflect back off him from the Torpoint' striker Cameron Ross who then had a free run on goal and the simplest of finishes.

Newlyn did start to respond, but it was only on the half-hour mark that they had another shot on target – again by Russell Brooker. Three minutes later and the visiting keeper was faster to a through ball, Chris Sturgess going close but Torpoint's second chance of the game was duly tucked away with 7 minutes left in the half as they broke following a Newlyn free-kick deep in the Torpoint half - the home defence allowing Ross to cut inside and finish into the far corner away from the diving Nathan Prentice, leaving Newlyn’s management with some serious decisions to be made going into the half time interval.

The 2nd half followed a similar vein to the 1st. Despite their confident build-up play there was always a final loose ball by The Saints that gave possession straight back to the visitors who were now starting to exert more pressure on the home side with a freedom than comes from a two goal cushion. Changes were constantly made but to little overall effect as the youthful Torpoint side gained in confidence and made the most of eating up as much time as they could at dead balls and free-kicks.

Newlyn seemed toothless going forward and rarely troubled the visitors’ keeper at all in the second period. The last 5 minutes did see a flurry of activity from the Saints as they looked for a way back into the game but it was all too little too late.

Two tough league games to come – away at mid-table Wadebridge then home to league-leaders Newquay, are followed by one of their hardest-ever fixtures in the Intermediate Cup away at Saltash Borough, means that the Saints need to address their failings from this match and try to return to winning ways.
