MATCH REPORT TO FOLLOW

St Newlyn East spurned the chance to consolidate a top four finish by failing to deliver at home when victory should have been assured. The home side dominated a young Newquay side who only managed three real chances of note throughout.

Already missing four of their regular starting outfield players the Saints suffered another blow when influential wide man Dan Ball was forced off following a tackle that saw his knee twist after just 3 minutes. However Newlyn were soon ahead when Ross London calmly finished under the advancing keeper just 3 minutes later.

The visitors equalised on 25 minutes when some poor play from Newlyn and a lapse in concentration saw the away team's striker toe-poke a shot past the advancing Prentice in to the corner of the net.

The second half saw the home side start brightly and Ross London squared for Jackson Rochford who was unmarked in the six-yard area only for his shot to be smothered by the Newquay keeper when it should have been in the back of the net. Further attacks by the home side failed to trouble the visitors' keeper as Newlyn stuttered in front of goal.

Newlyn then had a goal ruled out when the visiting linesman adjudged the ball to have gone out of play before being smashed into the net.

With just 5 minutes remaining Ross London was dispossessed and whilst he appealed for a foul the ball was cleared in to the Newlyn half, Ben Hawken collected the loose ball then uncharacteristically under hit his back pass that saw a Newquay forward reach the ball first and his square pass was easily finished by a team mate into an empty net for their first shot on target of the second half that saw the visiting players celebrate like they had just won the league!

Newlyn will know this was a game they should and could have won comfortably. They will have to improve in their next fixture when the welcome St Blazey Reserves to Cargoll Road.
