St Newlyn East travelled the short distance to their first away fixture of the season at Roche bouyed from their opening day win. Still without last season's Player of the Year - Harry Hay and teenage winger Owen London, they were also missing regular starting midfielder Harry Mugford and Dan Woodgate.
Newlyn started brightly and began to create chances with Ross London causing the home defence problems straight from the kick-off. The home side resorted to late challenges to stop the visitors and saw two players cautioned in the opening 15 minutes from cynical fouls. Newlyn unfortunately then had to replace the influential Jim Gosley due to an injury that forced the full-back off after just 20 minutes.
Martyn Probert danced past 3 defenders to flash a shot just wide of the far post before Josh Dingle, playing in a more advanced role, saw his drive strike a post and rebound to safety. Moments later London was brought down in the penalty area for what appeared to be a stonewall penalty only for the referee to ignore Newlyn appeals and wave play on. On 35 minutes Probert controlled the ball on the edge of the penalty area and unleashed a shot that flew beyond the diving goalkeeper and in to the top corner of the net to give Newlyn the lead.
Newlyn started the second half on the front foot and a flowing move down the right wing with players interchanging passes quickly saw the ball eventually fall again to Probert and his unerring finish doubled Newlyn's advantage just a minute in to the second half. Newlyn continued to press the home side but were unable to add to their goals. Roche, to their credit, never gave up and were proving to be a resilient opposition.
Newlyn were able to see out the game with only a few minor late scares and demonstrated that their team is slowly coming together and are currently moving in the right direction. After, despite the two successive opening wins, the Saints' manager Martin Grigg was keen to keep his players feet on the ground and not let the winning start lead to complacency. “It’s just two games, it doesn’t mean anything,” he said of being 4th in the table. “What it means is the team is playing well, we won two games, but last season we need to remember we didn't win a game until October so we know just how quickly things can change - for better or worse"
Newlyn's next fixture is on Wednesday 24th August when they host St Dennis Reserves in a 6.30pm KO at Cargoll Road.
