The opening stages were fairly tight and even in Newlyn’s second home game of the new season, but the home side soon began to take control enjoying possession and winning the midfield battle with Jack Thompson and Martyn Probert dictating the play alongside the dominant Harry Mugford who seems like a player with a point to prove this season.
However, Newlyn could not find a way past a stubborn St Dennis rear-guard and were left resorting to shots from distance. Mugford flashed a header inches over the crossbar and Ross London fired just wide as the visitors kept the hosts at bay.
A rare mix-up in the Newlyn defence forced Newlyn goalkeeper Nathan Prentice to commit to a challenge that resulted in the referee awarding a penalty that was duly dispatched. Newlyn came roaring back and a pinpoint free kick from Thompson was met at the far post by Ross London to head home the equaliser. But the visitors stunned the home side with a well taken goal on the stroke of half-time to restore their advantage.
Changes from Newlyn at in the interval saw Harry Hay and Elliot Powell join the action but Newlyn fell behind to a third St Dennis goal when they failed to react to a deflected free kick that was prodded in to the far corner on 50 minutes. This seemed to be the turning point Newlyn's supporters had been expecting and waiting for as Newlyn pressed the visitors from the restart and suddenly looked livelier and more energetic. London doubled his tally, coolly finishing under the advancing goalkeeper o 53 minutes before Probert completed the comeback 3 minutes later with an arrowed shot across the stranded goalkeeper.
St Dennis’ frustration was becoming apparent with Newlyn looking fitter and the more likely to score again, as they then had a player sin binned that only gave the now rampant home side more incentive to g for the win. A penalty awarded to Newlyn on 72 minutes allowed London to complete his hat-trick and saw another visiting player sin binned for dissent.
An own-goal following a cross from Newlyn’s full back Ben Hawken made sure of the points for the home side although St Dennis kept working until the final whistle – despite losing a third player for dissent late on. Newlyn were made to work hard for their win but it showed the character they are building this season that will stand them in good stead for coming games - especially their next fixture away at Foxhole Stars.
