Yet again for the second match in a row Newlyn found themselves missing 6 of their regular starting team and on the day of the game lost another 3 players to work, illness and unavailability.
Newlyn were resilient and tidy in their play, their organisation making it difficult for Foxhole to break down, and they possessed the game’s outstanding players in Brooker, uncannily able to thwart the visitors with timely interceptions, and goalkeeper Prentice, whose positioning to field efforts on goal was excellent.
Newlyn felt they should have had a stonewall penalty when a break by Rochford down the right wing saw Owen London get a head of the Foxhole defence only to be felled to the ground from behind as he burst in to the penalty area with the ball nowhere in sight. More misfortune came Newlyn’s way when key midfielder Harry Mugford was injured and had to be replaced just after 20 minutes meaning the loss of another key player for the home side.
However, once Rowe had opened the scoring for Foxhole on 25 minutes by tapping home after Prentice had parried Aidan Dingle’s drive following indecisiveness in the Saints defence, the visitors became more assured and the home team lacked sufficient attacking threat going forward , despite London’s excellent back-to-goal play.
Foxhole improved after the break, enjoying far more of the ball, reducing Newlyn to breakaways. Paradoxically, Prentice was required to make fewer saves, as attempts on target were at a premium, although Bould did double the lead when he latched on to Coates’ huge clearance to chip the keeper from an acute angle after 64 minutes. Charlie Prynn then showed good trickery to fire home the third left-footed off the far post from twenty yards with just 15 minutes left.
London then latched on to an error from the Foxhole captain Rickard to coolly finish from twenty yards with just seven minutes remianing.
Despite the loss Newlyn were pleased with how they competed when taking into account the number of key players they were missing and can now look to build on this season to come back even stronger in the new St Pirans League next season.
