Newlyn left Lux Park with a share of the points but their overriding feeling will be one of frustration and points dropped as key decisions left them baffled and bewildered.
Liskeard started brightly and opened the scoring from a direct free-kick that Saints keeper Nathan Prentice will be disappointed to have conceded. However it was the decision of the referee to allow Liskeard players to be part of their defensive wall - instead of a metre away from it that the law dictates - that left them frustrated as this decision prevented them from defending the free-kick as effectively as the could have.
However this spurred Newlyn on and Dan Woodgate was extremely unfortunate to see two efforts strike the frame of the goal before the striker claimed his reward with a powerful finish in to the roof on the net with 10 minutes remaining in the half.
Newlyn made 3 substitutions at half time and this gave them added impetus allowing them to score again 5 minutes in to the half when Owen London's initial shot was saved by the home keeper but he reacted quickest to slot home the rebound. Liskeard were able to draw level and again Newlyn were left asking the referee why he wasn't enforcing the law when another direct free kick - again taken with Liskeard players part of Newlyn's defensive wall - was deflected off the wall and past the stranded Prentice.
On 76 minutes Newlyn re took the lead when Woodgate scored with a fine finish across the keeper. He then thought he had completed his hat-trick only to be flagged offside from an earlier passage of play. Liskeard equalised and yet again it was in controversial circumstances when the official acknowledged Newlyn wanted to make a substitution when the ball had gone out of play but then chose to allow Liskeard to take the throw in deep in Newlyn's half that they crossed in to the box to score from at the far post.
A game that had otherwise been played by both teams in a competitive and great spirit was slightly marred with 2 minutes remaining when a Liskeard player was sent off for an ugly stamp on Newlyn's Russell Brooker.
