St Newlyn East travelled to table topping North Petherwin sitting in second place having lost their position at the top the previous week when having no fixture. However The Saints were missing 5 players that started the previous win at Nanpean and also had Dan Woodgate still absent through work so knew they would have to be at their very best and have to utalise their full squad in the fixture.
The opening exchanges saw the home side press Newlyn back and they were indebted to some fine saves from Nathan Prentice in goal. However Newlyn weathered the early attacks and soon created chances of their own - Jackson Rochford saw his shot smothered and Ross London was unable to head home at the far post.
The deadlock was broken by the home side on the half hour mark when a sliced clearance from Newlyn's James Turpie saw the ball spiral up behind him and drop unbelievably over the scrambling Prentice and in to the far corner for an own goal.
The second half was a tight contest with both keeper's making fine saves. Newlyn's Owen London saw his shot tipped acrobatically away and he then thought he had won a penalty when tripped from behind in the penalty area.
As Newlyn pushed for an equaliser North Petherwin found spaces when attacking and the home side made sure of the three points late in stoppage time when they scored a very late 92nd minute header to leave Newlyn deflated.
Newlyn will be proud of how the were always in the contest - even with so many absentees - and they will use this experience to make them stronger for the rest of the season.
