Keen to make an impact on their local rivals, the Saints lost a number of available players in the build-up to this fixture and their lack of numbers was ultimately to affect their performance and the eventual result. The bad weather resulted in a tricky surface which also impacted on the game and a warm-up injury to return-signing Ross Emery added to the pressure on the Saints even before the game had started.
Following a series of corners for the home side Newlyn failed to clear the ball away and ex-Saint Callum Faulkner stubbed in a short-range effort to give the hosts the lead after 15 minutes. This spurred on the home side and Dan Ball struck a long-range shot from a tight angle that few could have dealt with to double their lead just after the half-hour.
An injury to Saints' keeper Prentice caused a degree of concern as it initially seemed to be serious, yet the official prevented Newlyn's management team from dealing with the injury quickly - one of several dubious decisions seen to have been made by him during the game.
Half time changes saw Lawrence on for Rochford, and during the half Rochford had to return when Josh Dingle broke his foot blocking a challenge with 20 minutes left on the clock. Substitute Ben Symonds had a glorious opportunity to score for Newlyn on 75 minutes but he contrived to head over the crossbar from all of 3 yards with the goal at his mercy
With 5 minutes left Sam Lawrence scored to give the visitors hope as the game moved to its conclusion but it was too little too late.
