St Newlyn East produced a gritty and resilient performance against Foxhole and Goverseth Park as the League's two remaining unbeaten teams faced off.
Foxhole started in their normal fast paced way but were left to rue their inability to convert their chances with Newlyn's defence marshalled by Sam Eglinton and Harry Hay in no mood to concede.
With the game a close, well contested affair Newlyn suffered a major blow, losing Martyn Probert on 18 minutes to an injury following an awkward landing on his knee. Within minutes of this Foxhole opened the scoring when Courtney Rowe scored from close range. Newlyn were then dealt yet another injury before half-time resulting in Harry Hay leaving the field and the team being re shuffled to accommodate yet another substitution.
Just before half time a long cross from Newlyn's left deceived the home side's keeper and Owen London met the ball at the far post with a text book header back across the keeper in in to the far corner to bring The Saints level. Newlyn started the second half brightly and to the home team's shock took the lead on 60 minutes when Dan Parsonage raced on to a through ball and volleyed a long range effort over the stranded Foxhole keeper and in to the top corner.
Ross London had a glorious opportunity to double Newlyn's advantage when he danced past 2 defenders only to see his shot flash inches past the post. Foxhole then threw everything at Newlyn who were now defending as if their lives depended on it and seemed to be inching closer to a win.
However a strange decision from the referee gave Foxhole the opportunity the needed when he penalised Newlyn keeper Nathan Prentice for "double handling" in the penalty area and awarded the hosts an indirect free kick 10 yards in front of Newlyn's goal. Rowe stepped up and fired a low shot home for his second of the day with just 3 minutes remaining.
As the referee blew for full-time Newlyn knew they had taken a huge step forward showing a character and resilience that in certain games they had been missing last season.
