A Simon Baulch header on the hour sent Newlyn into the next round of the Cornwall FA Intermediate Cup but only after Nathan Prentice produced a series of outstanding saves in the first half.

Saltash Borough started on the front foot and their direct style of play - moving the ball quickly to their lively strikers - forced Newlyn to sit deeper and retain possession well when on the ball.

A Saltash free-kick saw Prentice initially save well but the ball fell to a Saltash player who reacted to head the ball towards the goal only for Prentice to spring up and tip the ball onto the crossbar where it was then cleared. Another shot from distance saw him parry the ball over the bar with a strong hand.

Despite the visitors' pressure Newlyn looked composed and worked the ball forward well but lacked the incisiveness and goal threat when needed in the final third.

Half-time saw this rectified as Newlyn looked far more dangerous and when in positions to deliver a telling pass took the opportunity to threaten their opponents goal.

On the hour Newlyn made the game's decisive breakthrough. A Summers-Evans corner arrowed into the penalty area and was met with a powerful downward header by Baulch from 8 yards to give the home side a led their second half performance deserved. A two minute spell after this saw Ash Bradshaw almost double Newlyn's advantage when he headed agonisingly over and the home side had a very strong claim for a penalty when another low cross was misjudged by a defender who saw the ball strike his arm only for the referee to rule it as accidental.

Saltash were shell shocked and Newlyn had further opportunities to increase their lead but were unable to take these.

The match drew to a close and Saltash threw everything at Newlyn and could have equalised with 10 minutes remaining but the striker dragged his shot wide of the far post when well placed to score with only Prentice to beat.

As the referee blew his whistle Newlyn were able to celebrate a fantastic when from a match that they rode their luck at times, dug deep when it mattered and showed their quality in the second half to earn a Third Round tie away at Mawnan.
