Newlyn travelled to Boscastle in the third round of the George Evely Cup much changed from the previous week’s win over St Minver. Missing several key players they only had one substitute but were determined to give everything to progress into the quarter finals and did just that with an impressive performance in difficult conditions.
The Saints got off to the best possible start when a chipped cross from Jake Watson on the left saw a Boscastle defender stretch to stop the diving Jackson Rochford from heading in only for the ball to deflect into the net for an own goal.
The commanding Jadon Gotthardt then leapt like a salmon to power home from an Ash Bradshaw corner to double Newlyn’s lead before Martyn Probert added a third – racing clear to coolly finish through the keeper’s legs following excellent work by Sonny Summers-Evans that forced the Boscastle full-back to make a mistake and gift the ball to Probert.
Newlyn thought they had scored a fourth when a scintillating move down the right hand side saw Rochford fire in a pinpoint cross that Probert finished with aplomb only for the goal to be ruled out for offside - much to the amazement of both sets of players!
Newlyn started the second half with the same energy and pressing that had characterised the first half and were rewarded when Dan Ball made a typical marauding run off the wing and raced into the penalty area before unleashing a shot that the keeper could only parry into the path of Watson who added Newlyn’s deserved fourth goal from a tight angle.
A Boscastle corner saw them reduce the arrears when a mix up saw the ball deflect into the net of one of the home team’s back, but Newlyn responded almost instantly when Probert scored his second of the day when a lung-bursting run from Gotthardt into the penalty area saw him win a sliding tackle that saw the ball controlled by Probert before slotting into the goal to the keeper’s left.
Watson completed the rout scoring Newlyn’s sixth when a pinpoint pass from Bradshaw saw Watson capitalise on a mix-up between the defender and goalkeeper to tap into an empty net.
Newlyn now await the quarter final draw to find out their next opponents in a fixture to add to their already congested end of season run-in.
