Newlyn started brightly, pinning their higher league opposition back in their half and were rewarded with the game’s opening goal on 10 minutes when Ross London cut inside on the edge of the penalty area to side foot home with his left foot.
London had a glorious opportunity to double Newlyn’s lead 5 minutes later when a through ball saw him race clear and with the goal at his mercy, he volleyed his shot straight at the home goalkeeper who was able to save – anywhere else and it was a certain goal.
The home side were now sitting deeper forcing Newlyn to come out with the ball and forcing errors from the Saints before breaking quickly. Borough equalised on 23 minutes when a deep cross was met by Soper who headed home and they took the lead just 5 minutes later again from a header as a home player crashed into the barrier surrounding the pitch some of Newlyn’s players stopped waiting for the ref to stop play for the injury and as the Borough players continued play on a cross was superbly met by Hames to glance his header past Prentice into the far corner.
The home side were now in control and scored their third of the half from another header when a move down the right saw Owen position himself between Newlyn’s central defenders to loop a header back across the goal to drop into the net.
Half-time changers saw Newlyn introduce Dan Woodgate and Owen London which seemed to give Newlyn an extra dimension as the more attack minded duo stated to pin the home side back. Captain Jack Thompson saw a free-kick from distance glance away off the cross bar before the home side scored their fourth – amazingly from yet another header – from a corner on 61 minutes.
Russell Brooker also then cannoned a shot from distance off the home crossbar with the goalkeeper rooted to the spot. Ben Lawrence was then dispossessed as he cut inside from the left wing and the home side quickly broke before scoring their fifth with a tap in from Thompson and McCarthy finished the scoring 3 minutes later when he held off Gotthardt before scoring into the far corner.
Again, Newlyn’s overall play – especially in the opening 20 minutes - was excellent and there were positives to take from playing against a team who has won the East Premier Division for the previous 2 seasons however they need to stop conceding goals from their own mistakes and start finding their scoring boots as they return to league action at Cargoll Road next week.
