On an unseasonably hot October afternoon, St Newlyn East produced a dominant performance to progress to the second round of a cup competition for the 2nd time in 2 weeks. Despite missing some key players, it was a very strong squad that the Saints fielded and would prove to be too much for the young Bodmin side that failed to repeat their pre-season success at Cargoll Rd.
The Saints came flying out of the blocks from the kick-off – Harry Mugford opening the floodgates with a firm low drive from 25 yards which beat defenders and the visiting keeper within 2 minutes. Bodmin nearly immediately levelled, forcing a fine save from Nathan Prentice, but this would prove to be their only chance for the first half. Ashley Bradshaw was found by a pinpoint Ross London corner after 4 minutes and he duly headed in firmly from close range.
Controlling across the pitch, Newlyn dominated in all areas, chances coming thick and fast. On 21 minutes in a goal was adjudged offside, just two minutes later and a shot blazed past the post and on 25 minutes a repeat corner was just headed over the bar by Bradshaw. Ross London fired in a shot just before the half-hour mark that forced the defender to make a desperate clearance – that blazed into his own net for an own goal.
Probert saw his powerful header from a pinpoint cross find the net only for the Newlyn goal to be disallowed for an apparent offside. This was swiftly followed by a searing drive from Russ Brooker that the visiting keeper did well to acrobatically tip away.
Ben Lawrence entered on 34 minutes to give London a break and was an immediate problem for the visiting defence throughout. Captain Jack Thompson scored on 37 minutes with a fierce low drive from just inside the box that beat the keeper low to his left. Less than a minute later and Martyn Probert completed the rout, slotting home from point-blank range after a great move by Jackson Rochford that saw his low cross beat all the defenders and the keeper allowing Probert the easiest of finishes at the back post.
With their captain Jack Thompson still recovering from illness Newlyn were able to withdraw their influntial skipper in the interval and replace him with the returning Ben Hawken after a long enforced absence
If Bodmin believed Newlyn would ease up in the heat they were sorely mistaken. Continuing to pile the pressure on the home side were producing the best football of the season so far giving their fans – and especially their “Young Ultras” a performance to remember,
On 53 minutes Probert fired home after a fine run only to be again ruled offside. Rochford came close – frustrated by a brave block (and collision) by the visiting keeper. On 57 minutes Ross London returned, replacing Probert to continue the threat upfront. One minute after, Rochford surged forwards again with London, a block by the keeper parried and fired in by Rochford, a desperate goal-line clearance by the defender then cannoned off the unfortunate keeper's back and wound up in the net for a second own goal. Just after this Max Smith came on for Chris Sturgess, and the unrelenting pressure continued. Another goal yet again chalked off for offside despite Ross London running from behind a defender to fire home from distance.
A lapse in concentration 20 minutes from the end saw a sloppy goal conceded by the Saints – disappointment for not retaining a clean sheet, much to manager Grigg's frustration, but understandable given their efforts and the conditions. Composure followed for the remainder of the game, and Ross London got his rewards just before the final whistle with a fine drive from the edge of the box after a good run to finally beat the offside trap and seal a fine performance by the Saints.
