Newlyn travelled west for the first time in many years as they visited Pendeen Rovers in Round 3 of the CCFA Intermediate Cup.
Four minutes in and Newlyn failed to deal with the anticipated "route-one" approach of Pendeen as a long ball move ended in a deflected own-goal that sunk the visitor's heads after just 4 minutes.
Lacklustre play resulted in a turgid 10 minute spell from the visitors as they conceded three further goals - poor defending costing them dear on 23 minutes, failing to deal with a fine strike on 25 minutes and conceding from a free kick that came from the referee choosing to ignore a blatent offside in the build-up just after the half-hour.
The last 10 minutes of the first half saw a minor rally from the Saints but a 5th goal 2 minutes into extra time at the end of the half put the final nail in the hopes of the Newlyn side. who were all completely out of sorts and off their game.
The 2nd half saw an improved effort from the visitors following numerous changes, but they were thwarted by some baffling decisions by the match official. A stone-wall penalty well in the Pendeen penalty area was somehow pulled back to outside the box, and a dissent sinbin saw the official re award the free-kick that he had originally awarded to Newlyn back to Pendeen.
Overall Pendeen were worthy winners but Newlyn were left wondering how and why they had performed so badly.
