Saints edged out in thriller at Cargoll Road

St Newlyn East narrowly lost to high flying Foxhole in a thrill a minute match at a "pitch perfect" Cargoll Road. Despite missing key players Newlyn produced an energetic and spirited display that was missing from their previous game, delivering a performance to be proud of.

Quickly taking advantage of the elements, the visitors soon went two up, Deadman releasing Cheshire to blast home from an acute angle before the same player was upended by Saints goalkeeper Zef Counter leaving Deadman to despatch the penalty.

Newlyn settled and started to knock the ball around with some relish, much as they'd done in the reverse league fixture at Goverseth, and deserved to level through a curling shot from twenty-five yards from Jack Scott which was soon followed by a clinical side foot finish by Dan Parsonage. However, Cheshire's pace for Foxhole was a perennial threat and he soon latched on to Harry Boardman's assist to lob on to the bar for Deadman to nod in the rebound to restore the visitors' lead.

With the breeze now at their backs, Newlyn spent large periods of the second half on the front foot and Foxhole looked to have weathered the Saints' storm until Elliot Powell cut in from the right to equalise with a cool finish. 16 year old Logan Capeling making his full debut at centre half for Newlyn was growing in to the game with every minute and he gave an accomplished performance.

With the sun burning strongly, and both teams running out of options from the bench, the deadlock was not able to be broken and the extra thirty minutes would prove challenging to tired legs and minds, which only served to escalate the excitement.

Within minutes of extra time starting Powell burst through to unleash an absolute thunderbolt that gave Heaton in goal for Foxhole no chance. However Cheshire was quickly able to bring parity by hooking beyond Counter. Within moments, the striker had completed his hat-trick, heading home from close-range.

The game was far from won and Newlyn continued to probe with purpose and throw numbers forward in search of a late equaliser. Ross London went close twice heading wide from close-range, before another Newlyn attack saw Whetter - who had been introduced as a late substitute to bring stability to an over-worked Foxhole rear-guard - head clear another Newlyn cross into the area to Cheshire with three minutes left, who promptly ran seventy yards with the ball to slot in.

Even then it wasn't all over, as Simon Baulch broke in to the penalty area to rifle home high in to the back of the net to make it a 6-5 special, however it was to ultimately prove not enough as despite Newlyn's valiant effort Foxhole held on.
