Newlyn seal home win to ensure positive start continues

Newlyn played their first home fixture of the season on a resplendent Cargoll Road playing surface and watched by a crowd of 40 who were not disappointed as the home side ran out comfortable winners.

It took Newlyn just 6 minutes to open the scoring when Dan Woodgate burst past two defenders only to be clumsily brought down in the penalty area leaving Elliot Powell to smash home the resulting spot kick.

From a Dan Parsonage corner Josh Dingle didn’t realise how much time and space he had, and his rushed snapshot flew over the crossbar. Callum Faulkner and Powell were linking well and Falukner’s shot was well saved. The Saints were now controlling the midfield through the combative due of Harry Mugford and the outstanding Cameron Buchanan. Newlyn were forced to make a substitution on 30 minutes with the excellent Will Perry being replaced by Lucas Moses.

Newlyn finished the half as they had started it with Powell scoring. This time the powerful striker held off two challenges before rifling a low shot across the goalkeeper into the bottom corner on 38 minutes.

The home side started the second half well and it took them just 4 minutes of the restart to score their third of the day when a great team move saw Powell place a low shot in to the corner of the net and complete his hat-trick. However, Newlyn were then forced to make another change due to injury with Jack Thompson being replaced by Ross Emery.

Newlyn were then awarded their second penalty of the afternoon on 61 minutes, only this time Powell stood aside, letting Faulkner score from the spot. With Zefran Counter only called in to action occasionally the Saints’ defence held firm and were able to press Roche deeper into their half and create more goalscoring opportunities. Parsonage saw a volley go agonizingly wide, Woodgate terrorized the full-back and Matt Toms showed he is still Newlyn’s speed king with blistering turns of pace in attack. Newlyn were able to enjoy long periods of possession – their confidence high with a four-goal lead and they probably should have scored more before the game was brought to a close by referee Lee Mankee.

Newlyn will reflect on this game with lots of positives – four goals scored, none conceded and with their key injured players nearing full fitness again it’s been a positive start to their season for the Club.
