The prolonged weather disruption has seen the Duchy league re-fixtured almost weekly and St Newlyn East were grateful for this late-arranged match as it allowed them to continue their fine run of form. The weather abated after early morning rain although the gusty wind and bobbly soft pitch would prove a challenge for both sides.
The early exchanges were fairly even, the visitors struggling to find their shape and for the opening quarter of the game there was only one clear chance for both teams as Martyn Probert smashed the ball into the right post just 4 minutes in. The deadlock was broken as Newlyn found their feet after 22 minutes of play when Josh Dingle crossed a fine ball to Dan Parsonage whose pinpoint pass found Brodie Mitchell who fired home from close range.
10 minutes later Paxton delivered another fine ball to link with young Lucas Moses who rifled his shot from all of 25 yards and a narrow angle to beat the keepers gloves. Mail-man Paxton once again assisted from a free-kick with a floated delivery decisively met on the 6-yard line by Mitchell for his point-bank headed brace.
Completely in control at the break Newlyn’s’ management had the freedom – and squad numbers - to make wholesale changes allowing some to rest and others to make an impact. One of these was debutant recent signing Craig Harvey who latched onto a parried save 5 minutes after the break to stab home with his very first touch in a Saints’ shirt.
Defensive changes were enforced on the hour as talismanic defender Al Titterington unfortunately twisted his knee on the soft ground, and the resultant disruption saw the Saints begin to struggle at the back, eventually unable to deal with a corner conceded in the last 10 minutes of the game to blot their copybook.
The win takes Newlyn to 2nd in the League table with games in hand and excitement beginning to grow as the season begins to build to it’s closing stages. This Saturday it is hoped that they will host Lostwithiel in the League (2:30pm kick off) at their Cargoll Road pitch but both Clubs will surely have one eye on the weather and ground conditions.
In other Club news the Saints will be hosting their ever-popular James Bond themed Casino Night at the Pheasant inn on Saturday 21st March. For details please see their Facebook page or contact the Pheasant Inn, St Newlyn East.
