NEWLYN LEAVE IT LATE

NEWLYN LEAVE IT LATE

Saints Sports News17 Dec 2019 - 11:17

Newlyn secure vital three points over Boscastle

Newlyn had to wait until the last 10 minutes of their Premier Division encounter against old adversaries Boscastle to score but an own goal and a Ross London screamer saw them take all three points.

The first half was fairly even with both sides creating chances – Newlyn relying on the pace pf London and Brodie Mitchell in attack with the visitors always dangerous from set plays. The home side suffered an early set back with Will Perry sustaining a recurrence of a knee injury and being replaced by Josh Cook on 25 minutes.

A fine move saw London beat the visitors’ dubious offside appeals but his final touch let him down when through on goal. Josh Cook will feel he should have scored for Newlyn when he met a Lucas Moses’ cross but the ball struck his shin and went wide of the goal.

Jamie Seery went close for Newlyn with a header before Zefran Counter in Saint’s goal was called in to action – blocking well from a Boscastle breakaway. The half ebbed and flowed as both teams sought to gain the upper hand but neither side could break the deadlock.

The interval saw Newlyn make more changes with the introduction of Martyn Probert and Ross Emery. Probert linked well with Mitchell – now playing in midfield – and played in London who saw his shot narrowly miss the target. Both sides were guilty of spurning chances before Newlyn had the stroke of luck they deserved when a cross was sliced back to his goal by an unfortunate defender who then could only smash the ball into the roof of the net as he tried in vain to make up for his mistake on 82 minutes.

Two minutes later came the game’s moment of real quality when Ross London collected the ball with his back to goal, spun his marker and unleashed a twenty five yard pile driver that flashed by the keeper who was rooted to the spot as the ball tore into the net.

With the now beyond them lost a Boscastle player lost control and his dangerous, high and late challenge on Craig Jackson saw him rightly dismissed. The resulting mele that followed from both as both sides players clashed, Newlyn's rightly angered by the challenge, saw Seery cautioned for the second time although how he was singled out in a large group that also included the Boscastle assistant manager who ran twenty yards on to the pitch to become involved was a mystery to all watching.

Newlyn, despite not playing to their potential, know that this win could prove to be a valuable three points at the end of the season as they work to keep in touch with the league leaders. The win ends a frustrating run of no regular games for Newlyn as they have only played 4 matches since the 19th October – a period of 8 weeks! They continue in league action when they entertain Saltash 3rds at Cargoll Road, 2.30pm KO.
