Newlyn came into this encounter with Altarnun with a 100% winning record this season but for the first time in six matches they failed to score and produced a disjointed, sluggish and out of sorts performance.
The opening exchanges were fairly even but Newlyn were unable to find their normal passing rhythm and uncharacteristic individual mistakes allowed Altarnun to have the better opening opportunities with Saints’ keeper Ian Brooks the busier of the two stoppers.
Newlyn were able to introduce Jamie Seery and Josh Dingle after twenty minutes for their home debuts and both impressed in a solid Newlyn defence.
Matt Toms had Newlyn best opportunity, bursting down the left wing before seeing his shot well saved. The visitors’ keeper then rode his luck when Newlyn seemed certain to score but he fell backwards and actually sat on the ball – stopping it from crossing the goal line against the post.
Toms then arrowed a cross across the face of the goal which Mitchell was agonisingly inches away from connecting with.
Newlyn were brighter in the second half and Brodie Mitchell had shots from distance that were off target. Martyn Probert also went close before a goal mouth scramble saw Altarnun eventually clear the ball to safety following a Toms corner.
The second half saw both sides create chances to win the game but neither team could find an end product to take the three points and both had to settle for a share of the spoils at the end of the match.
Overall Newlyn will feel that this was a missed opportunity to continue their excellent run but must take positives from the fact that again they kept a clean sheet this season – something they were unable to do for the whole of last season.
Newlyn’s next fixture is once more at home in The Duchy Premier League when they entertain AFC Bodmin at Cargoll Road, 2.30pm KO
