St Newlyn East made the long trip up the coast to face Tintagel in what always promised to be a physical test against both the conditions and their opponents.
Newlyn are rapidly rising back to full-strength – Jack Thompson returned from his cricket commitments and Josh Dingle was to make his debut after his transfer from the Saints’ local rivals Godolphin Atlantic. The weather was unseasonably warm with blazing sunshine and it was going to be a stern workout for which conditioning was vital.
The Saints had the perfect start to the game as after just 2 minutes recent signing Callum Faulkner found Martyn Probert with a fine pass that saw Probert bury the ball past the home ‘keeper. Frenetic play followed as the visitors dominated the field of play limiting the hosts to a few forays out of their own half. The Newlyn back-line played the offside trap to perfection leaving the Tintagel attack falling short.
On 18 minutes Probert got his second after Ross London chested Sam Lawrence’s sweet cross into his path and he gladly took his brace. 5 minutes afterwards London opened his account when he was cruelly brought down in the penalty area by a reckless challenge and subsequently converted the spot-kick.
The game was all but over when London again struck – this time following a great period of interplay by the whole team - superb one- and two touch football straight from the training ground – and rounded off with a Brodie Mitchell assist to London who scored his second.
The side were urged to maintain their concentration at half-time by Manager Grigg but also to ensure they enjoyed themselves. This the Saints duly did, as the 2nd half began with great one-touch passing and fine movement and confidence shown across the pitch.
Tintagel had little in reply apart from clumsy, industrial-grade fouls that Newlyn managed to mainly laugh off – however the repeated offending did result in some responses from the Saints but this just showed their determination to play flowing football in the face of some pretty borderline challenges.
Mitchell took his goal on the hour mark from a Harry Mugford pass, and Jack Thompson smashed a long-range curling free-kick around the wall into a bulging net 10 minutes after. Faulkner linked up with Ross Emery to score the visitors’ 7th as Emery slotted home and as the clock ran out Matt Toms smashed home the final nail in Tintagel’s coffin to send the visitors into party mode as they helped young right-back Lucas Moses begin his 18th birthday celebrations.
The result sees Newlyn climb to equal-second in the table and the performance was one to savour for the travelling support. Two weekends of Cup action follow for them now as they travel to Gorran in this Saturday’s Junior Cup opening round, followed by their first home fixture on the 28th as they host Polperro Res in the Knock Out Cup.
