SAINTS OPEN SEASON WITH WIN

SAINTS OPEN SEASON WITH WIN

Martin Grigg2 Sep 2019 - 11:01

New look Newlyn hit four at Tregrehan Mills

St Newlyn East began their Premier League campaign with a deserved win away at Tregrehan Mills who had opened their season a week earlier with an impressive six goal victory. It was a different looking Saints that took to the field from last season with new signings Craig Jackson and 16 year old Owen London included in the match day squad that also saw Harry Mugford back in his first competitive game since fracturing his leg last season and Ross Emery return from travelling.

Newlyn started the game full of energy and their sharp, incisive passing was causing the home side problems. Matt Toms sped down the wing and his cross was expertly finished on 12 minutes by Ross London for the Saints opening goal. This saw Newlyn create numerous chances, but they found the Millers goalkeeper in top form and he produced some top drawer saves when Newlyn looked certain to score.

Another slick move on 23 minutes saw Toms find Ross London in space and his pinpoint pass found Martyn Probert but yet again his fierce shot was saved and these missed chances were then to prove costly as just 3 minutes later the home side equalized following a mix up in the home defence that saw the Tregrehan striker rise to head home.

With 5 minutes left in the half Newlyn’s pressure brought their second goal when London saw his shot again saved but this time the rebound fell to Probert who made no mistake – finishing from close range.

The second half saw both sides play neat and attractive football with Newlyn’s goalkeeper Zefran Counter forced to make a fine save. The Saints were forced to make a change on 55 minutes when Mugford suffered a neck injury and was replaced by debutant Craig Jackson.

The Millers took advantage of Newlyn's slight change equalizing on 65 minutes from a header following another defensive lapse from the visitors and they then took the lead for the first time following a poor clearance with just 20 minutes left.

However, this is a very different Newlyn East to the side that only won one match from January to May and they regained their composure and started to create chances – forcing the home goalkeeper in to making more saves. They were rewarded for their pressure when Jackson’s shot deceived the Miller’s keeper and found the back of the net on 78 minutes. With Newlyn pressing for the winner London found himself one-on-one and this time he made no mistake, calmly finishing into the bottom corner with just 10 minutes remaining to seal the win.

This was a promising start to the new season for Newlyn with lots of excellent performances. The Saints now look to build on this in their next game on Saturday when they travel to fellow Premier League side AFC Bodmin at The Dragon Leisure Centre in a revamped Duchy League Cup.
