St. Newlyn East met St. Columb Major in the first round of the CCFA Junior Cup at Cargoll Road on a wet and windy Saturday that evoked memories of previous classic encounters between these two traditional village sides.
Having crashed out in the opening round last season Newlyn were determined not to suffer the same fate this year and were determined to start the game strongly. They were rewarded for this when Brodie Mitchell opened the scoring after just 2 minutes latching on to a long clearance to finish calmly past the advancing goal keeper. Lewis Dodd doubled the home side's lead on 8 minutes when he scored from close range.
Dodd scored his second of the game when he finished Martyn Probert's cross, sliding in from a tight angle. Newlyn then allowed Major to get back in the game when a free-kick from distance was expertly finished with curling shot above the diving Ian Brooks in Newlyn's goal to reduce the deficit with a minute left in the half.
Newlyn soon restored their advantage within a minute of the second half starting when a succession of Newlyn passing saw the ball break to Probert who smashed home. Substitute Kieran Rowland scored his first goal on 55 minutes when he pounced on a Sam Lawrence pass to round the keeper and tap home. Probert scored his second of the game and Newlyn's sixth when he met Lewis Dodd's pass.
Rowland then quickly scored two goals on 67 and 75 minutes to complete his hat-trick inside half an hour, the final goal a cracking left foot shot drilled into the far corner. Brodie Mitchell curled his second of the game in to the far corner following a well worked move on 84 minutes before Sam Lawrence completed the rout on 89 minutes with a sublime low finish past the un-sighted goal keeper.
Despite the terrible weather conditions both sides gave their very best and St Columb's young side can be proud of their performance and effort on the day that was a credit to their club despite the result. However it was Newlyn that progress to the next round and who, despite missing 5 regular players on the day, were worthy and deserved winners.
