Following their previous defeat at Foxhole, St Newlyn East were determined to give a positive response to the questions it had raised over their current desire and commitment. With gale force conditions at kick-off forecast to only get worse The Saints certainly had everything to battle against as Gerrans & St Mawes came knowing that anything other than a win would ensure they couldn't finish above Newlyn in the final league standings.
With the wind playing in their backs Newlyn pinned the visitors deep into their own half as the ever increasing gales made any attempt of passing football a mockery. However as the visitors soaked up Newlyn's pressure they grew in to the game and it wasn't until twenty minutes in to the match that Newlyn had their first attempt on target. The home side's gamble of playing Elliot Dodd seemed to have back fired when the inspirational defender was forced off after thirty minutes, to be replaced by Chris Ballett in midfield with Jack Thompson dropping in to defence, with the recurrence of the same injury he had suffered the previous Saturday.
However the change seem to work in Newlyn's favour with Ballett's 'metronome passing' having immediate effect enabling Ross London to have a couple of good chances at the end of the half.
The second half took Gerrans & St Mawes less than two minutes to register their first attempt of the half - stark contrast to Newlyn's opening in the first half. As the wind took hold of the match Newlyn were defending with a grittiness and work ethic that was missing against Foxhole but they were undone ultimately by the wind on seventy-five minutes. Despite initially awarding a free-kick to Newlyn just inside their half the referee then reversed his original decision to the confusion of both sides. Josh Kendall then struck a wind assisted free-kick from all of forty yards that cannoned down off the cross bar and in to the back of the net.
Playing some neat football Newlyn then threatened the visitors goal with a series of attacks that finally resulted in a corner. Ross London's in-swinging kick was met at the near post by Elliott Powell who drove his header home to deservedly equalise. Newlyn thought they had won the game late on when Harry Mugford unleashed a cannon of a shot into the wind that smashed against the cross bar and away to safety.
Overall a draw was probably the fairest result from a game that saw both sides a credit to their respective clubs.
