With both sides coming off their respective Junior Cup exits, this hotly anticipated derby game was expected to deliver it’s usual explosive outcome, but this ended up as one of the tamest "Saints-v-G" games in many years.
Godolphin fielded a strong side including regular first team players Joe Stone, Ash Bradshaw and last season's top goalscorer Ben Colquhoun whilst Newlyn made squad changes from their loss to Foxhole and made a formational change expected to counter and surprise the visitors.
It was the G who scored first, however, with ex-Saint Micky Thompson producing a fine diving header that topped a great move down the right wing. The hosts stumbled to gel together and changes were made less than half an hour in which had the desired effect as sub Sam Lawrence fired home from close range to level the scores at the break.
The second half saw the weather deteriorate affecting the hosts more than their opponents who began to dominate the game, forcing the Saints defence and keeper into ever more desperate defending from a succession of corners and shots.
Newlyn had their chances and a Dodd header and goal ruled offside but these were far too few. Godolphin caught a break when a low drive by Ben Colqhoun saw the previously safe hands of Counter fail him in the slippery conditions – the ball bobbled into his net.
The G then went on a surge, culminating in a well-timed run against the Newlyn defensive line who called for an offside not given by their home linesman and Lee Budge shot home to secure the points.
A late Newlyn push was simply too little too late and the dejected home crowd walked off in the wind and rain to ponder this drop in form of the Saints. However one positive to for take for the Saints is that all of Newlyn's league defeats this season have come after their opponents have fielded palyers from higher leagues.
Next weekend Newlyn travel to Sticker to hopefully stem the downward trend of the last few matches.
