St Newlyn East travelled to North Petherwin to complete their third opening fixture against teams who finished in the top four of the Premier Division last season, looking to get back to winning ways following their defeat against a strong Torpoint team from the previous weekend. With Ollie Downing unavailable having moved to London to start a new job Newlyn were able to welcome back Will Perry and Al Titterington to their defence who missed the trip to Torpoint.
Newlyn started like a team who had a point to prove and their energy and work rate, missing from the previous match, were soon causing the home side problems and after 12 minutes Martyn Probert broke the deadlock with a sweet strike into the corner of the net. The same player then saw his fierce shot scream over the cross bar following a superb pass from Lewis Dodd. Ross London then dances past 5 defenders but could not find the space needed to get a shot on target. Ian Brooks in the Newlyn goal was rarely called into action but when he did the home side found the Saints stopper in fine form as he dived low to his left to parry a shot.
Immediately from the start of the second half Newlyn's right-back Aaron Thompson burst into the area only for his low shot to be saved by the home goalkeeper. Probert then turned provider as Newlyn tore the home side's defence apart and his cross was met by London who was first to react in the penalty area to stab home.
Lewis Dodd then lost his marker to meet a London cross at the far post with a diving header to score the Saints' third of the day. Harry Mugford and London also saw efforts rattle the cross bar before North Petherwin scored a late consolation goal in the 92nd minute.
Newlyn showed their character and resilience in this game that was brought in to question the previous week but they showed in this game that they are a team that will keep surpassing their own expectations. With no game on Saturday the Saints next match is at Cargoll Road on Saturday 22nd September in The CCFA Junior Cup when the entertain St Columb Major.
