St Newlyn East started their new campaign back in the Duchy Premier Division with a fine win over one of the pre-season title favourites Veryan.
It was the visitors who started the brighter and were energetic in all areas of the field, closing the Saints down and causing them to panic and misplace passes. However, arguably, against the run of play it was Newlyn who opened the scoring after 9 minutes when the in-form Lewis Dodd scored. This seemed to settle the home side and they doubled their advantage soon after when Martyn Probert smashed home Newlyn's second.
Dodd was then pushed over in the penalty area and the referee immediately pointed to the spot despite protests from the away side. Dodd picked himself up to take the penalty kick but his effort was saved by the Veryan goalkeeper diving to his left.
Dodd then made amends for his miss with the goal of the game - a spectacular overhead kick that dropped into the bottom corner of the net as the half finished with Newlyn three goals ahead.
Immediately from the re-start of the second half Veryan lost possession and Newlyn attacked with pace leaving Dodd to square for Probert who added his second of the game as Newlyn started to run riot but were given notice not to underestimate Veryan's ability when Jack Bowyer pulled a goal back following a risky back pass from Newlyn debutant Brodie Mitchell that caught Ian Brooks unawares.
The impressive Dodd hit the crossbar from close range before another disputed foul from Veryan in the penalty area gave Newlyn another penalty kick which this time Ross London made no mistake from as he rifled home. Man of the Match Ollie Downing then ghosted and danced past three Veryan defenders before placing his shot beyond the dive of the keeper for Newlyn's sixth.
Another defensive lapse from Newlyn gave Bowyer the chance to add his second of the game in the closing minutes but Newlyn were able to see the remainder of the match out without further incident. With fifteen minutes left the Saints were able to introduce 16 year old Lucas Moses for his first competitive league match in adult football.
Overall Newlyn will be very pleased with their opening match and general performance. However there is no rest as they travel to another of the pre-season title favourites Torpoint in their next game for another tough examination.
