Off colour Saints concede sloppy goals again as Nanpean take the points.

St Newlyn East hosted Nanpean looking to continue their recent spell of good form but early mistakes from a slow start that has at times defined their season proved costly and was ultimately their undoing on the day.

It only took the visitors 6 minutes to open the scoring when individual errors down Newlyn’s left side led to a mix up in the penalty area and Trudgeon loop the ball over Newlyn’s goalkeeper Nathan Prentice’s head. Despite Newlyn ‘s shot stopper’s desperate efforts rushing back to stop the ball from crossing the line the ball was correctly adjudged to have crossed it for a goal.

Six minutes later and Nanpean were able to double their lead when Wilshaw out-muscled Newlyn’s left back Sonny Summers-Evans and finished low across Prentice into the bottom corner for a well taken goal.

Newlyn’s woes were then added to on 16 minutes when Dan Ball rolled his ankle on the pitch and had to be replaced by Chris Sturgess.

Just before the half hour Owen London was clumsily barged into by a Nanpean defender leaving referee Gary Cornish little option but to award a penalty which was duly dispatched by Ross London to reduce the arrears.

Owen London thought he had levelled the scores on 29 minutes when he scored from close range but he was judged to have handled the ball in controlling it before scoring and the goal was chalked off.

A misplaced back pass on 39 minutes saw Prentice rush out and bring down the Nanpean attacker close to the touchline for which he received a yellow card from the referee but he redeemed himself from the free-kick with a superb one-handed save. With just three minutes remaining in the half Newlyn gave away a needless corner which was met by Rickard, whose header evaded the Saints' defender on the post to loop into the net to give Nanpean a two-goal cushion at the interval.

Saints introduced Jack Thompson for the second half in place of Summers-Evans and he almost made an immediate impact but his pinpoint free kick was headed inches wide by Jadon Gotthardt within a minute of the re start. Owen London though he was about to score just before the hour mark but as he rose to head home a defender made a challenge and got the slightest touch before him to head wide.

Thompson saw his curling free kick well saved by Harbone before Jake Watson also headed wide for Newlyn on 83 minutes before Prentice was called into action one final time diving low to his left to make a great one handed save.

Newlyn’s second half performance showed that they were ore than able to compete with any side in the division but they cannot give themselves a mountain to climb by making avoidable mistakes as they did in the opening 12 minutes of this game.
